Amazon Just Walk Out rival shutters after failing to secure funding

Amazon Just Walk Out technology has been making waves in the retail industry with its cashier-less store concept. However, a potential rival to Amazon’s innovative technology has recently shut down after failing to secure funding.

Standard Cognition, a San Francisco-based company, was aiming to create a similar cashier-less shopping experience with its own Just Walk Out technology. The company had raised over $86 million in funding from investors such as CRV and Initialized Capital, but ultimately failed to secure the additional funding it needed to compete with Amazon.

The closure of Standard Cognition highlights the challenges that startups face when trying to break into the highly competitive and rapidly evolving retail technology space. While Amazon has the resources and scale to invest in and perfect its cashier-less technology, smaller companies like Standard Cognition struggle to keep up.

Standard Cognition’s closure is also a reminder of the dominance of Amazon in the retail industry. The tech giant’s ability to innovate and scale its technology puts it at a significant advantage over its competitors. With over 25 Amazon Go stores already in operation and plans for further expansion, Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology is becoming increasingly ubiquitous in the retail landscape.

Despite the setback for Standard Cognition, the cashier-less store concept is likely to continue gaining traction in the retail industry. Other companies, such as Zippin and Grabango, are also developing their own versions of Just Walk Out technology and could potentially pose a threat to Amazon’s dominance in the space.

As the retail industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Amazon’s cashier-less technology shapes the future of shopping. While Standard Cognition may have fallen short in its efforts to compete with Amazon, the demand for frictionless shopping experiences suggests that there is still room for innovation and competition in the space.
